Founding History
Shahbagh Jamia Madaniya Qasimul Uloom was founded in a blessed period of 1975 with the noble vision of spreading Islamic knowledge and religious values within society. The institution was established through the sincere efforts, guidance, and cooperation of distinguished scholars, devoted community leaders, and local residents. Under the supervision of the renowned scholar Hazrat Maulana Abdur Rahim Shaikhe Charipari (RA) and the dedicated leadership of Shaikh Muinuddin (RA), the madrasa initially began its journey as “Shahbagh Darul Hifz Madrasa,” focusing primarily on Tahfizul Quran education. It was later renamed “Shahbagh Darul Hifz Alia Madrasa” as the institution gradually expanded its academic activities and organizational structure. Following the death of Shaikh Muinuddin (RA) in 1996, the responsibility of leadership was entrusted to Allama Abdul Ghaffar Shaykh Mamrakhani (RA), whose wisdom and dedication further strengthened the institution’s educational foundation. In 1985, recognizing the growing need for proper Quran recitation training in the region, Shaykh Maulana Qari Abdul Hafiz introduced the Ramadan Qiraat Training Center under the Madaniya Quran Education Board. Through his tireless efforts and visionary leadership, the Qiraat department achieved remarkable recognition across the country and became a major pillar of the institution’s success.

In 2006, with the support of the Shura Committee and the local community, the institution was reorganized and officially renamed “Shahbagh Jamia Madaniya Qasimul Uloom.” Since then, the Jamia has experienced continuous academic, infrastructural, and organizational development, earning a respected reputation both nationally and internationally as a center of Islamic education, moral development, and community service.

Takmil Fil Hadith Education for Boys and Girls

Shahbag Jamia Madaniya was founded in 1395 AH (1975 CE) through the sincere efforts of devoted Islamic scholars and the local community, under the guidance of Hazrat Maulana Abdur Rahim Shaikhe Charipari (Rahimahullah) and the initiative of Shaykh Muinuddin (Rahimahullah). Initially established as Shahbag Darul Hifz Madrasa, the institution began with the Tahfizul Quran department and later developed into a respected center of Islamic education. After the passing of Shaykh Muinuddin in 1996, Allama Abdul Ghaffar Shaykh Mamrakhani (Rahimahullah) took responsibility for the madrasa and further strengthened its educational activities. In 1985, Shaykh Qari Maulana Abdul Hafiz (Damat Barakatuhum) established the Shahbag Ramadan Qiraat Training Center, which soon gained wide recognition and became a milestone in the institution’s growth.

In 2006, both educational streams were united and reorganized under the leadership of Shaykh Qari Maulana Abdul Hafiz (Damat Barakatuhum). The institution was officially renamed Shahbag Jamia Madaniya Qasimul Uloom in 2007. Since then, by the grace of Allah, the Jamia has continued its journey of academic excellence, spiritual development, and remarkable progress both nationally and internationally.

Educational activities

The foundation of any educational institution lies in the quality of its education, as learning and teaching are its true lifeblood. Recognizing this reality, the authorities of Shahbag Jamia Madaniya Qasimul Uloom place the highest importance on maintaining excellence in its academic system. Currently, around two thousand students are pursuing their studies under the guidance of nearly 70 skilled and experienced teachers. Every year, the students of the Jamia achieve remarkable success in the central examinations conducted by renowned educational boards, including Al-Hayatul Ulya, Azad Dini Edara, Befaqul Madaris, Tanzimul Madaris, and Rabetatul Madaris. To ensure comprehensive Islamic and modern education, the Jamia operates through several well-organized departments, including the Kitab Department, Tahfizul Quran Department, Banat Department, Islamic Kindergarten and Noorani Department, Qiraat Department, Orphanage Department, Computer Department, and Technical Department.

General Education Department

The Kitab Department is the largest and most important department of the Jamia, comprising all classes from the secondary level to the highest stage of Islamic education, Takmeel Fil Hadith. In this department, students are taught core Islamic subjects such as Tafsir, Hadith, Fiqh, Arabic language, and Arabic literature, alongside Bengali, Urdu, and English languages as part of a comprehensive curriculum. The department strives to develop students into competent, knowledgeable, and socially conscious scholars through a balanced education enriched with both religious and contemporary knowledge. Along with academic learning, equal importance is given to moral training and character development so that students may grow into ideal leaders capable of guiding the nation in religious, social, and national affairs.

Tahfizul Quran Section

This department can be called an integral part of the Jamia. The journey of the Jamia first started through this department. Currently, more than three hundred students are completing the memorization of the Holy Quran under the close supervision of 13 skilled Hafiz Sahib. At the same time, they are also learning basic Tajweed and important matters. The main goal of this department is to produce pure Hafiz of the Al-Quran. So that through this, he is respected and appreciated in this world and the hereafter and the responsibility of preserving the Book of Allah is also fulfilled.

Islamic Kindergarten Department

The Islamic Kindergarten and Noorani Department plays a vital role in providing primary-level education to young children. The main objective of this department is to ensure basic Islamic education alongside proper instruction in Bengali, Mathematics, and English. Currently, the department is operated under the caring supervision of 14 teachers trained in child education. One of its notable features is the application of child psychology and scientific teaching methods to create an effective and child-friendly learning environment. In addition to Quran recitation, Hadith reading, Tajweed, and essential Islamic teachings, students are also taught subjects from the National Education Board’s primary syllabus with equal importance. Furthermore, the madrasa arranges for fifth-grade students to participate in the Primary Final Examination under the National Education Board. To support the physical and mental development of children, safe sports and physical exercise activities are conducted daily under teacher supervision after Asr prayer.

Ramadan recitation training

The Qiraat Department of the Jamia is a renowned branch both nationally and internationally, serving the Holy Quran with dedication and excellence for the past 38 years. The primary objective of this department is to provide proper Tajweed-based Quran recitation training to Muslim children and students. It is recognized as the largest and most prominent center under the Madaniya Quran Education Board. Every Ramadan, hundreds of students from different regions gather here to receive specialized Qiraat training. The department offers instruction from the nursery level up to Dauratul Quranil Karim under the guidance of qualified and experienced Qaris. By the infinite grace of Almighty Allah and the tireless efforts of the teachers, students consistently achieve outstanding results in board examinations each year. May Allah Almighty continue to bless and accept the noble services of this department.

Computer and Internet Department

The modern world is greatly dependent on computers and internet technology, and there is no alternative to digital knowledge and information exchange in today’s era. Through computers and the internet, access to global sources of knowledge and learning has become easier than ever before. Realizing the importance of technological education, Shahbag Jamia Madaniya maintains an active presence in the digital world and strives to prepare students for an enlightened and knowledgeable future. Alongside religious education, the institution recognizes the immense importance of computer literacy as a valuable means of livelihood and professional development. With this vision, Shahbag Jamia Madaniya has been operating a Computer Training Department for the past several years. Currently, the department provides training facilities with 10 computers. However, due to the increasing number of interested students and the shortage of equipment, there is an urgent need for additional computers. The Jamia sincerely appeals to generous and compassionate individuals to support the development of this important department.

Orphanage Department

All levels of education at Shahbagh Jamia Madaniya are provided completely free of cost. Despite this noble initiative, the challenge of student dropout, particularly among orphaned and underprivileged children, has not been fully eliminated. Many children are deprived of basic necessities such as food, clothing, shelter, and medical care, which often forces them into child labor and distances them from education, Islamic values, and the opportunity for a healthy future. To address this social and educational crisis, Shahbagh Jamia Madaniya established the Orphanage Department in 2008 as a humanitarian and welfare wing of the institution. For this noble project, the respected Haji Abdullah Mia of Mahidpur generously donated 12 acres of land, while the construction cost of the ground floor of the five-story foundation building was fully funded by Dr. Abdul Malik, a distinguished son of Shahbagh and a Bangladeshi expatriate living in the United States. Currently, the orphanage provides shelter and care for more than four hundred orphaned and needy children, with all expenses related to food, clothing, education, and medical treatment being borne by the madrasa authorities. As the first well-organized and quality orphanage in the region, it has earned widespread appreciation and official recognition, and was registered under the Ministry of Social Welfare of Bangladesh on 11 July 2010 with Registration No. 1117/10. Shahbagh Jamia Madaniya sincerely appeals to generous individuals and charitable members of society to continue supporting the infrastructural development, quality improvement, and smooth operation of this noble humanitarian initiative.

Girls’ Division

Considering the importance of women’s education in modern society, Shahbagh Jamia Madaniya has established a separate Girls’ Wing under its direct supervision in an independent building. Maintaining full compliance with Shariah principles and regulations, the institution has introduced a modern, advanced, and effective curriculum to ensure proper Islamic education for female students. Alongside religious studies, special emphasis is also placed on essential contemporary education to support the overall intellectual and moral development of the students. Currently, around three hundred female students are studying under the careful supervision of eight qualified teachers. Since many students come from distant areas, the Jamia has arranged transportation facilities by purchasing a dedicated bus to ensure their safe and convenient travel. To enhance language proficiency, creativity, and writing skills among the students, the institution has also formed the Al-Midad Girls’ Parliament. Through this platform, weekly training and educational activities on various subjects are conducted regularly. In addition, wall magazines and publications in different languages are prepared and published by the students, encouraging literary, intellectual, and creative development.

Al-Midad Student Council

Al-Midad Student Council is an active student organization dedicated to the intellectual, literary, and creative development of the students of the Jamia. To enhance students’ intellectual capacity and speaking abilities, the council regularly organizes weekly lectures, discussions, and debate programs. In addition to the prescribed academic syllabus, the council has also established a separate library containing books on various subjects, enabling students to acquire broad and diversified knowledge. To nurture students as skilled and competent writers, the council publishes literary magazines and quarterly periodicals in Arabic, Bengali, and English, featuring students’ writings such as articles, stories, rhymes, poems, and other literary works. A biweekly magazine titled Anuperona is also published to inspire and encourage emerging young writers in their literary pursuits. Furthermore, the annual publications At-Takbir and Eshana are released every year on the occasion of the Jamia’s annual conference and have already gained significant appreciation among intellectual readers across the country. Under the initiative of Alokita Lekhak Mancha, a literary platform formed under the Student Council, several special bulletins have also been published at different times under various titles such as Al-Hafiz, Shafqat, Marsia, Chittrodan, Artanad, and Bedna. In addition to literary and cultural activities, the Student Council also provides opportunities for students to learn computer skills and receive practical training under proper supervision.

Al-Mu’een Council:
The Fuzala, Huffaz, Qurra and Abna of Shahbagh Jamia are spread across different parts of the country. In order to keep their relationship with the Jamia intact and to perpetuate their mutual harmony, Al-Muin Parishad was formed on 26.01.2013 in Islam after the founder of the Jamia, Muhtamim Maulana Shaykh Muinuddin (may Allah have mercy on him). Another important goal of this council is to organize various services for Islam and the Muslim community and to implement the vision and movement of Darul Uloom Deoband, the memorable one of Akbar-Aslaf, at the grassroots level of society. This is the exclusive organization of the Fuzala, Qurra, Abna and Huffaz of the Jamia. Under this council, various memorials, magazines and supplements are published every year on the occasion of the annual Islamic conference of the Jamia. Last year, this organization organized a seminar titled ‘Islamic Jurisprudence in the Light of the Quran and Sunnah’. It published a memoir titled ‘Al-Hikmah’ based on the essays written by the Jamia’s eminent scholars at the seminar.

Language learning courses
The time is now such that it is not possible to prove Islam as superior in the modern world by reading a few books selected from the syllabus. To make the religion victorious, one must first be strong with all the necessary knowledge. Of course, for this, there is no alternative to acquiring proficiency in different languages, especially English. To fulfill this need, the Faculty of Modern Language Education has been started, where there is a system of acquiring proficiency in three languages, Arabic, Bengali and English, as an additional opportunity outside the curriculum books and time, by skilled teachers.

Fatwa Section

Islam is a complete and eternal way of life that provides guidance for every aspect of human life. As new social and personal issues continue to arise, there is a need for proper Islamic solutions based on the Quran and Sunnah, which is known as Fatwa. To meet this need, Shahbagh Jamia Madaniya established a dedicated Fatwa Department, now recognized as one of the leading Fatwa centers in East Sylhet. The department provides authentic solutions to various personal, family, and social issues through careful research and scholarly judgment. Currently, written Fatwas are issued based on the collective decisions of a board of six qualified Muftis. By the grace of Allah, the department has long been serving Islam and the Muslim community with sincerity and responsibility.

Library Department
The importance of the library in human life is immense. It is difficult for a nation to stand tall without a developed library. The richer the library of a nation, the richer that nation is in terms of knowledge and experience. Shahbagh Jamia Madania is always eager to develop its library into a rich library. Every year, books worth lakhs of taka are purchased to transform the library into a large library with thousands of books and volumes. However, there is still a need for many books. Due to financial constraints, purchasing them remains out of reach. Meanwhile, it is essential to pay attention to the well-wishers of Jamia.

Publications Department

In the present time, the Muslim Ummah faces various ideological challenges and false movements in different forms. To uphold the truth and spread authentic Islamic teachings, effective publication and intellectual efforts are essential. With this vision, Shahbagh Jamia Madaniya has established a strong and active Publishing Department. Under this department, various booklets, magazines, bulletins, and publications are regularly produced. The annual mouthpiece At-Takbir is also published under the supervision of the Al-Midad Students’ Association. So far, the department has successfully published 13 editions of At-Takbir, 3 editions of Eshana, and several other books under different titles. In addition, quarterly magazines including the Arabic magazine Al-Manar, the Bengali magazine Adhyayan, and the English magazine The Page of Knowledge are regularly published. The department has also published several memorial publications and special bulletins on national and religious occasions, earning appreciation from scholars and intellectual readers for its rich and meaningful contributions.

Technical Department
A separate technical department has been opened under the Banat branch of Jamia. Twenty sewing machines have been purchased under this department last year. Currently, more than a hundred students are being provided sewing training by skilled female instructors. Any student who participates in it has the opportunity to take training. A few female teachers of Jamia are assigned to supervise this department. Jamia is taking initiatives to further develop and activate the department. Besides, Jamia is also thinking of opening an ‘Electronic Training Department’ under the Technical Training Department.

Residential Dormitory Department
Initially, there was no need for a residential hostel as there were few students and there was sufficient lodging facility. Later, as the number of students increased several times and there was no provision for all the students to have their own land, the Jamia authorities started a hostel department on the advice of the locals. This department provides free accommodation and food to the poor and meritorious students. About eight hundred meritorious students stay in the hostel day and night. A head teacher and eight assistant teachers are assigned to supervise them day and night.

Jamia’s Management and other councils:

The administrative and organizational activities of Shahbagh Jamia Madaniya are managed through several important councils and departments, including the Majlis-e-Shura, Majlis-e-Amela, Majlis-e-Aam, Ihtemam Department, Talimat Department, Accounting Department, Majlis-e-Ilmi, and the Board of Trustees. These bodies work collectively to ensure smooth administration, academic excellence, financial transparency, and the overall development of the Jamia.

One of the few people who had a special contribution to the establishment of Shahbagh Jamia Madaniya was Mr. Alhaj Abdur Rahman Amir Saheb, who was the first president of the executive committee. From 1975 until his death, he carried out this important responsibility very efficiently for 43 years. After his death, the valiant freedom fighter Mr. Fazlul Haque Abul Mia served as the president since 2017. The future plans of Jamia are quite important. If Allah gives tawfeeq, Jamia is fully optimistic to implement all the plans. Some of them are mentioned below:

  • Due to the lack of separate residential hostel facilities due to the location, students are using classrooms as living quarters. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a separate hostel.
  • The idea of building a staff quarter to facilitate Jamia teachers and their families to live near the institution dates back a long time.
  • Jamia has planned to introduce branches of specialization to provide students with the opportunity to pursue higher education based on the subject matter. In particular, there are plans to introduce an Ifta department in the near future.
